Study finds AI-generated meme captions funnier than human ones on average

Summary
A study comparing the creation of memes by both artificial intelligence (AI) and humans has found that whilst AI-generated meme captions scored higher for humour, creativity and shareability, the best examples overall were still created by people.
The research is set to be presented in 2025 at the International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces, and follows a famous Turing Test proposed in 1950 by computing pioneer Alan Turing, which aims to assess the capability of AI to produce content that cannot be distinguished from that created by humans.
The study did however note that whilst AI can produce content that appeals to a broad audience, human creativity is still crucial for creating content that makes a deeper connection with audiences.
When examining memes under three categories (work, food and sport), the research team found that memes related to work tended to be rated higher in terms of humour and shareability than those relating to food or sports.
