Dell risks employee retention by forcing all teams back into offices full-time

Summary
Dell’s CEO, Michael Dell, has told employees in a memo that those who live close to a Dell office must return to the office five days a week from March 3rd.
Those who do not live near an office will be allowed to work remotely, but may not be promoted.
This is very similar to Amazon’s recent approach to hybrid working, and faces similar concerns around discrimination and employee retention.
Dell claims the acceleration of digital transformation during the pandemic has demonstrated the value of “human interaction”, despite the speed and efficiency of remote collaboration.
There are also questions around the real estate strategy; it is unclear whether Dell will follow Amazon’s lead in revising its office footprint.
