Summary

  • Instagram, which is now part of Meta, collects user data via in-app interactions, cookies, and its Meta Pixel JavaScript, and uses it for targeted ads
  • Users can see which businesses and organisations are sharing their Instagram activities with Meta, and can stop them from doing so
  • To do this, open the Instagram app, log in, tap your Profile icon in the bottom right, and enter Settings
  • Click on Accounts Centre under the Your Account section
  • Navigate to Account Settings, then Your Information and Permissions, and select Your activity off Meta technologies
  • This shows a list of all organisations that are sharing your activity, with the number of interactions; click on an entry for more information
  • To disconnect the activity, go back to Your Activity, hit Disconnect specific activity, select the ones to disconnect, and hit Continue; confirm to log out of any associated apps and prevent future Facebook logins.
  • Note that it can take up to 48 hours for the disconnecting of some activities.
