A new Ultra HDR feature is now available in Google Photos for Android devices to enhance images by increasing their brightness and providing more naturalistic images with improved colour and contrast.
The Ultra HDR feature can be accessed by updating the Google Photos app to the required version and opening any image, clicking the edit button, and selecting Adjust, then Ultra HDR from the suggestions menu.
Once selected, the image will be automatically upgraded to the Ultra HDR format and saved as a separate image file, and will be stored in the Google Photos album from which the original image was uploaded.
The new feature is backward compatible and can be viewed in standard SDR format on non-HDR screens, providing cross-platform compatibility.
However, to benefit from Ultra HDR, the user’s screen must be HDR-capable and support the ISO 21496-1 standard. To gain more space you can delete duplicates of any images that have been upgraded to Ultra HDR.
