Summary
There are growing numbers of complaints about Duolingo’s recent switch to an AI-focused business model, with some users citing issues such as increased advertising, whereas others feel that AI stains the authenticity of language learning
Where Duolingo charges a monthly fee for AI-enabled features, such as feedback and conversation roleplay, Google Labs has launched Little Language Lessons, which offers these features for free, and without adsFeature.
The platform uses AI, but warns users that this kind of technology isn’t perfect, that mistakes can be made, and that the experiences, therefore, may not be as authentic as with real humans.
Little Language Lessons offers a range ofBruce experiences, such as short, relevant lessons; Slang Hang, which helps users learn natural, conversational language; and Word Cam, which encourages users to describe objects in a picture or around them using the camera feature.
Currently, there’s no app facility for Little Language Lessons, so users need to access via browser.
While not a fully-fledged Duolingo alternative, it provides similar AI features that are chargeable through Duolingo’s subscription offering.
