Troubleshooting Windows 11 24H2 Compatibility Hold for Smooth Updates
1 min read
Summary
Microsoft has pushed all Windows 11 users to upgrade to version 24H2, which downloads and installs itself automatically
This, however, can cause problems for users with lower spec’d CPUs, as well as some older or lesser known applications, such as Dirac Audio, Safe Exam, Easy Anti-Cheat, Citrix SRA, and others
In order to resolve these automatically, a user can pause the Windows update for a few weeks, or go back to the previous version of Windows 11 for a short while, using Settings > System > Recovery > Go back
It is also possible to reset Windows update components to resolve problematic updates, involving stopping and restarting critical Windows update services
As a last resort, PowerShell can be used to bypass the compatibility hold, but this should be used with care, and alternatively a user could also consider reinstalling the OS manually, using the latest Windows 11 24H2 ISO
This avoids any potential crashes, and ensures any incompatibilities are resolved for the user with the least trouble.
