Lyft has partnered with Marubeni, a Japanese conglomerate, to fund its self-driving fleet of taxis, as the ride-sharing firm looks to launch its first autonomous vehicles in Dallas, Texas, in 2026.
The vehicles will use Mobileye driver assist technology, which is already found in numerous carmakers, although Lyft has not yet revealed which brands will be used for its fleet.
It plans to add thousands of autonomous vehicles to its platform after the initial launch.
Texas is becoming a hub for autonomous vehicles, with Tesla also planning to launch a fleet in Austin, while Uber has partnered with Waymo to launch a service in Austin and Atlanta, Georgia.
The state has lax regulations around AVs, while California’s have become increasingly strict.
