Reddit is planning to introduce paid subreddits and increase its use of ads over the next two years as it seeks to generate more revenue as a company.
CEO Steve Huffman confirmed the arrival of the paid subreddits but did not reveal the details of how this would work.
It is thought this change will only apply to new subreddits meaning existing free subreddits will remain so.
Reddit has more than 97 million daily active users but to monetize these users it has introduced ads and made deals with sporting leagues to use their content to serve more sports-related ads.
The company is also considering a commerce option where users can post items they want to buy, sell, or trade directly on Reddit, with the platform taking a cut.
The aim is to monetise these users with a balance sensitive to user experience to avoid users moving to other sites.
