Summary
Researchers at Cyble Research and Intelligence Labs have identified 20 fake cryptocurrency wallet apps on the Google Play Store that are designed to steal users’ crypto wallets.
The apps are posing as legitimate platforms including SushiSwap, PancakeSwap and Hyperliquid, and lead users to a fake login page where their mnemonics phrases are stolen.
Mnemonics phrases, also known as seed or recovery phrases, are a sequence of words generated when a crypto wallet is created and allows users to regain access to their wallets if their device is lost or stolen.
The researchers advise that anyone who has these apps installed should immediately uninstall them and that users should ensure they are downloading apps from legitimate, known sources.
The discovery highlights that even official app stores can be a source of malicious offerings and that all users must remain vigilant.
It is also serves as a reminder for users to backup their recovery phrases securely, such as written on a piece of paper and stored in a safe location.
