Don't Update Your PC Yet — Latest Windows 11 Patch Breaks File Explorer
1 min read
Summary
Microsoft regularly updates Windows 11 to squash bugs and install new features, but its latest patch has created issues with the File Explorer programme.
After installing update KB5051987, the File Explorer programme refuses to open folders, even if accessed through shortcuts or Windows search.
The programme doesn’t crash, according to hosting service Windows Latest, with the explorer.exe process working normally in the Task Manager.
Microsoft offers File Explorer alternatives to access data, but this patch also creates problems with the Windows update itself, with some downloads stuck at 0% and others resulting in a “Something didn’t go as planned” error.
The Patch generates problems with GPUs and built-in cameras, with some systems refusing to boot altogether after the update.
Microsoft is likely to resolve these problems with a subsequent update, but in the meantime, those impacted can manually uninstall the problematic November update.
