Summary
Security researchers have discovered a new strain of malware, called FrigidStealer, which targeting Mac users by redirecting them to a fake browser update page via compromised websites.
Once the victim has entered their password, the malware steals cookies, files relating to passwords and cryptocurrency, and any Apple Notes.
While cybersecurity resilience is often seen as a key strength of Apple’s products, this highlights the ways in which criminals continually seek to outsmart even the most robust security infrastructures, largely through tricking human users.
To protect themselves, users should be vigilant about checking the security of links, only download files from trusted sources and – if in doubt – don’t click ‘update’ unless you are certain the software is legitimate.
Using free antivirus software may also help mitigate the threat.
