Summary

  • Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi has unveiled its new Modular Optical System (MOS) at the Mobile World Conference (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona this week.
  • The concept phone’s magnetic array is designed to accommodate a high-quality camera lens which can instantly share images to the phone via LaserLink Communication technology, and does not require charging separately as it is powered through the phone.
  • The modular system combines the imaging capabilities of traditional camera hardware with the computational power of smartphones, according to Xiaomi, and its sizable sensor gives it a quality that cannot be achieved by smartphone camera lenses.
  • It is not known if or when the concept will come to market, but Xiaomi stated in a release that it “has pioneered a groundbreaking approach to imaging technology”.
