Summary

  • Apple has introduced AI-generated review summaries for apps in its App Store
  • The summaries will be rewritten each week for popular apps and will comprise a one-paragraph summary of the main positives and negatives of each app
  • The intention is to give potential downloaders a speedy overview of other users’ experiences with the app before they commit to downloading it
  • This AI functionality is already in use on Amazon, and other apps such as Instagram and Snapchat, which uses it to curate feeds for users and summarise content.
  • The introduction of AI-generated summaries could, however, lead to increased gaming of the system, as developers may concentrate on maximising positives and discounting negatives in their apps to influences the summaries.
  • The feature is only currently accessible in the US to beta testers in English, but this will roll out more broadly in April, with a view to reaching all app users by 2025.
