Windows Just Created a Mysterious Folder on Your PC, but It's Nothing Serious

Summary
As Microsoft released its Patch Tuesday April 2025 updates, users found a mysterious folder called inetpub appearing on the drive where Windows 11 is installed.
Although it didn’t take up any space, users worried as to why it was there.
The folder is usually created when a user enables an optional Windows feature called Internet Information Services (IIS), which is Microsoft’s web server software for developers.
It is used to host web pages locally on a PC before they are pushed live.
With the April update, the folder was added as part of a security patch for a bug that allows attackers to modify system files or folders (CVE-2025-21204).
Although Microsoft has now confirmed the folder was not created by accident, it failed to mention its appearance in the release notes, causing confusion when users spotted it.
To reconnect the folder to the security patch, users need to re-enable it.
