China’s Shenzen 8K UHD Video Industry Cooperation Alliance has developed a single multimedia connector to rival the likes of HDMI, DisplayPort and USB-C.
Known as the General Purpose Media Interface (GPMI), the new connector boasts 480 watts of power for charging devices and transferring data, contrasted with HDMI’s 18Gbps bandwidth.
There are two variants of GPMI - Type-B and Type-C - with bandwidths of 192Gbps and 96Gbps, with support for up to 480W and 240W of power respectively.
Gaming laptops with high-end GPUs will be able to connect to an external display and charge via the cable, with the potential to simplify streaming setups with its higher bandwidth.
GPMI Type-C is likely to launch sooner, with Q1 2025 scheduled for testing on appliances, with consumer models expected in 2026.
