Summary

  • You can avoid paying for extra cloud storage by deleting what you don’t need, optimising your settings and trimming backups, says Jake Redman in a MakeUseOf guide.
  • For example, delete unwanted photos and videos, especially duplicates, blurry shots, old memes and screen recordings, and optimise iPhone storage with iCloud Photos, keeping smaller versions locally and leaving the full-resolution originals in the cloud.
  • Also, manage your iCloud backups, deleting old or unnecessary ones, and turning off backup for apps that don’t need it, such as streaming apps and news apps that store data in the cloud.
  • Review and delete other iCloud data held in Mail, Messages, Voice Memos and third-party apps, deleting large voice memos that you have saved elsewhere, clearing out large attachments and files from the first two apps and deleting old conversations with lots of photos or videos.
  • Finally, transfer some photos and videos to external storage, using the Photos app or File Explorer on Windows, and if you use iCloud Drive, move large files to your computer or another cloud service if you don’t need constant access from all devices.
