Most Android keyboards come with predictive text and other assistive features enabled, which lets you type faster by suggesting words before you finish spelling them. But have you stopped to think about what happens to all that data? Every password you punch in, every message you send, every search query you type passes through your keyboard app first. And most of them are quietly learning from all of it. If you’ve ever tested open-source alternatives to Gboard, you already know how much data the mainstream options collect by default. The good news is that most keyboard apps let you turn off individual tracking features, and if that’s not enough, there are privacy-focused keyboards that don’t collect anything at all. Here’s what your keyboard knows, where that data ends up, and what you can do about it. Your Android keyboard remembers more than you realize Every keystroke teaches it something new Your keyboard doesn’t just sit there waiting for you to tap letters. It’s learning. Every time you type a word, correct a typo, or accept a suggestion, the keyboard takes note. Over days and weeks, it builds a profile of your vocabulary, your common phrases, and even the people you text the most. This in itself is not concerning, because predictive text needs data to work. But the collection doesn’t stop at learning your favorite words. Gboard, for instance, logs your in-app search history, tracks which apps you use the keyboard in, and records voice typing snippets. SwiftKey collects similar data and can also request your location so it can autofill addresses faster. Syncing is another area of interest. Some keyboards back up your learned words and typing habits to the cloud. Samsung Keyboard can sync keyboard data through Samsung Cloud. Gboard uses federated learning, where the training happens on-device but certain signals still get sent to Google when your phone is on Wi-Fi and charging. The data may not leave your phone as raw text, but it does leave. What makes this tricky is that none of it is hidden. It’s all disclosed in privacy policies and Play Store data safety sections. The problem is that most people never check. And when your keyboard comes pre-installed on your phone, you probably didn’t agree to anything consciously and started typing. You can turn off most keyboard tracking The settings are there if you know where to look Most keyboard apps are surprisingly open about what they track. If you check the Data safety section on your keyboard’s Play Store listing, you’ll see a breakdown of everything it collects, whether that data is shared with third parties, and which parts are optional. Gboard’s listing, for example, flags app interactions, in-app search history, and installed apps as collected data. Most of this data collection is optional and can be turned off. On Gboard, head to Settings > Privacy and disable the toggles for sharing usage statistics and improving Gboard. You can also revoke permissions for contacts, camera, and microphone from the app’s permission page. On Samsung Keyboard, go to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings and work through the Smart typing section. You can turn off auto replace, predictive text, emoji suggestions, and auto spell check individually. While you’re there, it’s worth clearing any stored data too. Samsung Keyboard has a Reset to default settings option that lets you delete personalized predictions, wiping the words it has already learned. If Samsung Cloud is backing up your keyboard data, you can disable that from Settings > Accounts and backup > Samsung Cloud. The point isn’t that Google or Samsung are doing something nefarious with your typing habits. It’s that you have the option to limit what gets collected, but most likely didn’t pay any attention to it untill now. There are privacy-focused keyboards When turning off toggles isn’t enough If disabling individual settings feels like playing whack-a-mole, you can switch to a keyboard that doesn’t collect data in the first place. Several open-source keyboards are designed from the ground up to keep everything on your device, with no cloud sync, no telemetry, and no internet connection required. LeanType LeanType is a fork of HeliBoard that adds AI-powered proofreading and translation while keeping everything offline. It’s not on the Play Store, so you’ll need to sideload the APK, and the setup process is more involved than a typical keyboard install. But once it’s running, you get a surprisingly capable keyboard with multiple installation modes that let you choose your own balance between features and privacy. HeliBoard Heliboard is the foundation that LeanType builds on, and it’s an excellent choice on its own. It’s free, open-source, and doesn’t connect to the internet at all. You still get autocorrect, swipe typing, clipboard history, themes, and even voice typing. If you want a no-frills keyboard that respects your privacy without asking you to give up core features, HeliBoard is hard to beat. FUTO Keyboard Futo Keyboard started as a project to build an entirely offline speech-to-text engine, and the keyboard grew around it. Everything runs locally, including voice recognition, and its Play Store data safety section reads “No data collected.” It’s a bit more polished than most open-source keyboards, and it’s the closest thing to a mainstream keyboard experience without the tracking. AnySoftKeyboard AnySoftKeyboard has been around for years and remains one of the most established privacy-first options. It supports gesture typing, multiple keyboard layouts, and downloadable language packs. The predictions aren’t as sharp as Gboard’s, and there’s no way to access settings directly from the keyboard itself, but it keeps all your data strictly on-device. Your keyboard shouldn’t need to know everything For most people, turning off a few toggles in Gboard or Samsung Keyboard will be enough. For others, switching to a keyboard that never connects to the internet in the first place is the only answer that feels right. Either way, the choice should be yours, not a default you never knew you accepted.
