This is how a lower-resolution disc can appear better than a movie or TV show streamed in 4K. The three main physical media disc standards are DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K UHD Blu-ray — but not every 4K UHD Blu-ray release is created from a 4K source. That begs the question: are 4K UHD Blu-ray discs created from a 2K digital intermediate really that much better than the 1080p Blu-ray versions? Considering 4K UHD Blu-ray discs cost much more than their traditional Blu-ray counterparts, is the upgrade worth it when upscaling is doing most of the work? While you may be shocked to learn many 4K UHD movies are really based on 2K digital intermediates, this doesn’t mean you should stop buying them.
4K Blu-rays are often created from 2K files

Physical media releases are derived from a piece of the film finishing process called a digital intermediate. This is one of the final parts of the production pipeline, and it’s where the video is edited and color graded. If the video was shot on film, the film is scanned as part of the process. A true 4K UHD Blu-ray release is based on a 4K film scan or a 4K digital source, otherwise known as 4K digital intermediates. But the overwhelming majority of 4K UHD Blu-ray releases are created from lower-quality, 2K digital intermediates.
Movies shot on film cameras could be scanned at 4K resolution to get the sharpest image off of the 35mm film negatives used for capture. The switch to digital cameras for movie production threw a wrinkle in the 4K UHD Blu-ray production process. With film, the process is (somewhat) easy: scan the film in 4K, and create a 4K digital intermediate in the film finishing process. Using a digital camera, the camera itself needs to be capable of shooting in 4K, and all digital editing, color grading, and rendering processes must preserve the 4K resolution throughout the entire production pipeline.
Up until recently, this proved to be difficult. Many production teams stuck with digital cameras that couldn’t shoot in 4K, and workflows that resulted in 2K digital intermediates. As a consequence, most 4K UHD Blu-ray discs are actually created using 2K digital intermediates. Sites like Blu-ray.com and Digiraw.com track whether a 4K UHD Blu-ray disc is based on a native 4K source, or is upscaled from a 2K digital intermediate.
4K Blu-rays are better — even upscaled ones
The 2K master files used for upscaling are better than any disc
A 4K UHD Blu-ray disc is better than a standard Blu-ray disc — even a 4K UHD Blu-ray disc created using a 2K file. It’s a mistake to assume the 2K digital intermediate upscaled to make a 4K UHD Blu-ray disc is the same as your 1080p Blu-ray disc. Yes, the 2K file is slightly sharper than 1080p, but it’s more than that. Studios making 4K UHD Blu-ray discs have access to the 2K digital intermediate at its highest possible quality. This file has a much higher bitrate than the compressed version on a 1080p Blu-ray disc, which means every second of video offers a sharper image.
An upscaled 4K UHD Blu-ray disc will be more detailed than a standard Blu-ray for the same reasons that a standard Blu-ray offers a sharper image than a streamed movie. It all comes down to bitrate and the quality of the original source. Think of a final Blu-ray disc or a movie on streaming service as lossy versions of a film, and the 2K digital intermediate as the lossless version. Take the lossless version and run it through a 4K upscaling process, and it’ll look better because there is more original data to work with. Plus, 4K UHD Blu-ray discs support higher bitrates than standard Blu-ray discs, so they can take advantage of the high-bitrate 2K file.
The uncompressed 2K digital intermediate can be upscaled to 4K in a way that will always beat a compressed 1080p Blu-ray disc, but your mileage may vary in practice. Simply put, there’s no true replacement for an original 4K source. While 4K UHD Blu-ray discs produced from a 2K file will outperform a standard Blu-ray, 4K UHD Blu-ray discs produced from a native 4K source are more likely to blow you away with incredible visuals.
There’s a reason to buy 4K UHD Blu-rays anyway
Even if the release is based on a 2K file, the Blu-ray disc has better HDR
Aside from the bitrate, resolution, and source quality benefits of an upscaled 4K disc, other advantages include color and brightness improvements. A 2K digital intermediate uses a wider color space and more dynamic range, which causes the final 4K UHD Blu-ray release to look better. This is partly because standard Blu-ray discs are limited to 8-bit color and standard dynamic range (SDR). Meanwhile, 4K UHD Blu-ray discs expand the color depth to 10-bit or 12-bit while adding high dynamic range (HDR) support. Even an upscaled 4K UHD Blu-ray disc offers HDR10 information, and many discs add HDR10+ or Dolby Vision support on top of that.
Seeing “4K UHD” on the box doesn’t guarantee a Blu-ray disc was made from a native 4K source, creating confusion. Instead, you need to look at community-led databases and forums to find out whether a release was finished using a 2K or 4K digital intermediate. That said, you’ll get some benefits — including a sharper image, a higher bitrate, a wider color space, and high dynamic range support — even if your 4K UHD Blu-ray disc is upscaled from a 2K file.
