Battery drain is one of those things that feels simple, but it’s often harder to track down. Most of us tend to blame apps, battery health, background activity, and even extreme temperatures. And sure, all of those play a role. But the major battery drain often comes from what’s right in front of you the whole time. It’s the display. I recently dropped my phone’s display refresh rate from 120Hz to 60Hz and got two extra hours out of battery. Those high refresh rates are costing you battery life Most of that smoothness is going to waste Your phone’s refresh rate is basically how many times the display updates its image every second, and it’s measured in Hertz. So 60Hz means 60 updates per second, 120Hz means 120 updates per second, and so on. Most budget and midrange phones only have a 60Hz display, so you don’t really have a choice there. But on flagship phones, you have the option to choose between 60Hz and 120Hz, so you can prioritize what matters more to you. Some phones even offer a 90Hz middle ground. The math is pretty simple. When you go at 120Hz, the display has to work twice as much compared to 60Hz. While that doesn’t mean your phone uses twice as much battery, the difference is not nothing either. Depending on your phone’s model, the difference in battery life can be anywhere from 15 to 25% over a full charge. So yes, if battery life matters to you, lowering the refresh rate is the easiest upgrade you can make. The obvious downside is that 60Hz looks less smooth. Now, whether you actually notice this or not depends on a few things, like how long you’ve been using 120Hz, what you’re doing on your phone and, of course, your eyes. If you’re gaming, for instance, the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz is hard to miss. But if you’re mostly typing messages or watching Reels, it’s much less noticeable. Switching to 60Hz isn’t as bad as it sounds You probably won’t notice a difference after a day I can already hear a few in the comments bashing me for recommending 60Hz on a flagship phone, but hear me out. 60Hz isn’t actually as bad as it sounds. In fact, most people won’t even realize what their phone is running at unless they open the Settings app. And if you need proof, remember that every iPhone ran at 60Hz until the iPhone 13 Pro. The adjustment period from 120Hz to 60Hz is also quite short. Your brain can easily adapt to it, especially when you’re not actively looking for the difference. More importantly, 60Hz is also fine for most of what you actually do on your phone, which is watching videos, browsing social media, messaging, and reading emails. None of these things benefit from the 120Hz. Where you’ll really notice the difference is in fast UI interactions. Quick swipes, apps switching, scrolling through a long page at speed, and, of course, gaming. You just have to choose what matters more to you here. I personally switched to 60Hz on my Galaxy S26 and the improvement in battery life makes it worth it for me, especially since the phone has a modest 4300mAh battery to begin with. So yes, I’d say even if you’re not keen on settling for a lower refresh rate on your flagship, it’s worth trying out. Worst case is that you flip it back. Some phones handle refresh rates better than others You don’t have to give it up completely If you have a high-end flagship phone, you might not have to choose between 60Hz and 120Hz at all. Some phones, like the Pixel 10 Pro use LTPO display technology, which basically means they can adjust the refresh rate dynamically based on what’s on your screen. Google calls it Smooth Display, and it’s very clever. When you’re scrolling through a feed or gaming, the display ramps up to 120Hz. But when you’re reading a static page or the screen is idle, the refresh rate drops all the way down to 1Hz. That means you get the best of both worlds. That’s also why the Pixel 10 Pro is set to 120Hz refresh rate by default, unlike the regular Pixel 10. Mind you, my Galaxy S26 also has an adaptive refresh rate, but that doesn’t mean it’s not benefiting from the 60Hz cap. This isn’t the only display setting that matters Refresh rate isn’t the only display setting that affects battery life. Brightness is probably the biggest lever most people ignore. Auto-brightness sounds like the smart solution, but it also depends on your habits. If you regularly increase the brightness level manually, the auto-brightness feature can pick up on that and start doing the same thing. You can train your phone the other way around, and it’ll work in your favor. If your phone has an OLED or AMOLED display, which most phones do at this point, dark mode can be handy. It can reduce battery drain since these displays turn off pixels that are supposed to show black, meaning they consume far less power. Screen time-out is another one. If you’ve set your phone to lock automatically after 1 minute of inactivity, dropping it to 30 seconds can make a huge difference.
