  • Gemini’s new Device Help feature can inspect a Pixel’s settings and device data, diagnose certain problems, and apply relevant fixes.
  • Device Help is currently available only in English on Pixel phones running Android 17 or newer, and it works exclusively through the primary profile.
  • Gemini cannot perform destructive or security-sensitive actions, including factory resets, password changes, permission management, or location-setting changes. Finding the right toggle in Settings responsible for a misbehaving phone can take a while. Thankfully, Google now wants Gemini to save the day. According to Google’s Gemini support page, a new Device Help option can inspect a Pixel’s active settings and device data, diagnose certain problems, and change settings on the user’s behalf. That could make Gemini considerably more useful than an AI that merely repeats generic troubleshooting instructions. Gemini can investigate your Pixel before suggesting a fix Device Help can act on what it discovers Pixel phones already have a hidden diagnostics menu for troubleshooting, but that tool is primarily intended to test hardware such as the display, sensors, and connectivity. Device Help with Gemini, on the other hand, identifies how the phone is configured and translates a vaguely described complaint into the appropriate setting. The feature is currently limited to English on Pixel phones running Android 17 or newer, and it only works through the device’s primary profile. To use it, open Gemini, tap the attachment button, select Device Help, and describe the problem in ordinary language. Google says Gemini can answer questions about the phone’s current state, such as which apps have consumed the most mobile data or whether the ringer is enabled. It can also investigate why storage is running out, help stop unwanted pop-up ads, reduce excessive notifications, or perform simpler tasks like keeping the display awake longer. If it identifies a setting that could resolve the problem, Gemini can change it, although it may request confirmation first. This can save a fair amount of manual detective work. Tracking down unexplained battery drain, for example, can require checking several Pixel settings individually before finding the culprit. Naturally, Google does not explicitly promise that Device Help can solve every battery problem, but access to the phone’s actual settings and device data should give its answers more context than a conventional Gemini conversation. Storage may be an even better example. Android can attribute tens of gigabytes to a vague “System” category without clearly explaining what users can remove. Since Device Help can examine information from the phone itself, it can provide a more relevant answer than the standard advice to delete photos or clear every app’s cache. Gemini cannot change every setting for you Google has placed firm restrictions on the new troubleshooter. The uncharted territories for Gemini include performing a factory reset, changing a PIN or password, deleting profiles, granting app permissions, altering location settings, or modifying security protections. It also cannot enable accessibility privileges that could create remote-control or social-engineering risks. Those restrictions mean Device Help will not replace every manual troubleshooting guide. Still, if it works reliably, asking your phone what is wrong — and letting it fix the relevant setting — is something that I’d prefer over digging through Android menus any day.
