Why You Shouldn’t Save Passwords in Your Notes App (and What to Use Instead)
1 min read
Summary
The note app that comes with your phone is convenient for shopping lists and random thoughts, but it is not good for password storage and security.
Anyone who picks up your unlocked phone has access to your passwords, and most free note-taking apps do not encrypt data on all devices.
Password managers such as 1Password, Bitwarden, Google Passwords, iCloud Keychain, NordPass, Proton Pass, and Dashlane are safer alternatives, using 256-bit AES or XChaCha20 encryption, and are specifically designed with security in mind.
They have features such as unique password generation, auto-fill, breach monitoring, password health checks, and two-factor authentication.
LastPass is a popular password manager; however, it has had multiple security breaches so is not recommended.
Swapping over to a password manager may be daunting, but it is worth it in the long run for security.
