For wrong with my phone’s battery. On days when I was out running errands, sitting in cafés, or moving around, my phone easily made it through the day with plenty of charge left. But somehow, the days I spent at home barely touching it were the ones when the battery drained the fastest. It made absolutely no sense — I blamed my Pixel 10 Pro, figured its battery was showing its age, and even caught myself looking at replacement phones. Then I found a screen buried deep in my phone’s settings that finally gave me an answer. My Pixel’s battery wasn’t draining because the phone was getting old, and nothing was wrong with the battery itself. The real problem was where I was sitting. I blamed my battery for the wrong crime The real culprit was hiding in my network settings The screen I’m talking about shows your phone’s actual signal strength as a number, rather than relying on those vague bars at the top of the screen. On my Pixel, it’s buried pretty deep inside the network settings, while Samsung phones show it on the SIM status page. I’d never really had a reason to check it before. After all, who looks at their mobile signal as a number? As long as I had a few bars, I assumed everything was fine. Except, at home, it really wasn’t. When I checked the signal strength while sitting at my desk, the number was awful. My apartment happens to be in a spot where my carrier’s signal is already fairly weak, and the walls and other obstacles between my phone and the nearest tower only make matters worse. That’s something those signal bars never really showed me. They made my connection look perfectly usable, while the actual signal-strength reading painted a very different picture. More importantly, it finally explained the strange battery drain I’d been dealing with. My phone wasn’t losing charge while sitting idle for no reason; it was constantly working harder in the background just to stay connected. My phone never really got to rest The cellular radio was doing more work than I realized Here’s the part I didn’t realize for the longest time: your phone is constantly communicating with nearby cell towers, even when you’re not actively using it. When the signal is strong, that doesn’t take much effort. Your phone can maintain the connection without using much power, and you probably never notice anything happening in the background. A weak signal changes that. Instead of simply accepting a poor connection, your phone has to work harder to maintain it. Its cellular radio can use more power as it tries to stay connected, reconnect, or search for a better signal. And all of that can continue even when the screen is off, and the phone is just sitting on a table. That finally explained what was happening at home. Whenever I spent the day sitting at my desk, right in one of the weaker signal spots in my apartment, my Pixel was doing more work in the background than I realized. I might barely touch it for an hour, but that didn’t necessarily mean the phone was resting. It also explained why the opposite happened whenever I went out. In places with a stronger and more stable connection, my phone didn’t have to work nearly as hard to stay connected. So even though I was actually using it more — checking Maps, replying to messages, taking photos, or scrolling while waiting for something — I could sometimes come home with more battery left than I did after a quiet day at my desk. I took my phone for a walk around the house How to check your own signal the right way If you’ve ever had the same suspicion about your phone’s battery, there’s a pretty easy way to check whether your signal might actually be the problem. It only takes a couple of minutes, and I’d definitely try this before assuming your battery is starting to wear out. The number you’re looking for is measured in dBm (Decibel-milliwatts), and because it appears as a negative number, it can look a little confusing at first. The easiest way to read it is to remember that closer to zero is better. Around -80 dBm or better generally means you have a strong signal. Get into the -90s, and things are getting weaker, while anything below -100 dBm means your phone is dealing with a pretty poor connection. The exact impact varies by network and phone, but the weaker the signal, the harder your phone may have to work to maintain the connection. Finding that number is fairly easy once you know where to look. Follow these steps to find this number on your Pixel:
- Open the Settings app on your Pixel.
- Scroll down and head to About phone.
- Tap SIM status here.
- Look for signal strength, where you’ll see the reading in dBm. The exact menus can vary slightly depending on your phone and software version, but the important thing is finding that dBm number rather than relying entirely on the signal bars at the top of your screen. Once I found it, though, the more interesting experiment was simply walking around my apartment with that screen open. The numbers changed far more than I expected, depending on where I stood. My desk turned out to be one of the worst spots, but moving over to a particular window improved the reading by nearly 20 dBm. That’s a massive difference from moving just a few feet, and I would never have known it from looking at the signal bars alone. So if your phone mysteriously loses battery faster in one room, at your desk, or even in one particular corner of your home, open the signal-strength screen and take a walk. You might find that your battery isn’t the problem at all. I fixed my battery without touching the battery Once I knew what was actually causing the drain, I could finally do something about it instead of convincing myself I needed a new phone. And the first thing that helped was simply changing where I sat. I moved my desk closer to the window where I’d found the strongest signal, and even that made a noticeable difference during my work-from-home days. My phone wasn’t suddenly gaining hours of battery life, but it also wasn’t dropping nearly as quickly while sitting untouched beside me. Moving my desk helped, but there was an even better solution. Since my phone is connected to Wi-Fi whenever I’m home anyway, I enabled Wi-Fi calling. That lets supported calls go through my Wi-Fi connection when needed, which is especially useful where cellular reception isn’t great. Instead of relying entirely on the weak signal reaching my apartment, my Pixel could use the more reliable connection I already had. That combination made a real difference for me. I had a better cellular signal at work, and Wi-Fi calling gave my phone another way to stay connected when reception wasn’t cooperating. More importantly, I stopped seeing the kind of unexplained battery drain that had made me question the phone in the first place. The experience also changed how I think about battery problems. I’d spent so much time assuming that a phone draining unusually quickly meant its battery was getting old or something was wrong with the hardware. In my case, the phone was perfectly fine. It had just been sitting in a terrible spot and working harder than I realized to stay connected. So these days, when I notice a phone losing more battery than it should, I don’t immediately start blaming the battery. I check the signal first. Sometimes, fixing your battery problem can be as simple as moving a few feet closer to a window.
