If you’ve read through some of my previous articles, I’ve mentioned several times that I use a five-year-old Dell Latitude laptop. Not that I don’t want to replace it after all these years, but I honestly don’t need to. The work I do — writing, researching, and editing — doesn’t require me to have a juicy laptop, and I’m not dropping $1,000 on a laptop just to spend my days on Google Chrome. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are some instances where my laptop’s age kind of shows in its performance. So, what do I do? Well, I looked into Windows settings like any other sane Windows user would. We all know how Windows tends to default to some unnecessary features that could drag down your PC’s performance. After going through Windows 11, I found a few settings that I could change to make my aging laptop feel a little less like an aging laptop. Windows 11’s modern look isn’t free on older hardware Transparency and animation come with a performance cost Windows 11 looks good, sure; there’s no denying that. Things like transparency effects, animations, shadows, and other visual effects make the operating system feel more “modern” and eye-catching. The problem is that they require your PC’s graphics and other system resources to render them. On a newer and more powerful PC, you probably won’t notice much of a difference. But on an older laptop with integrated graphics and limited resources, reducing these effects can make the interface feel more responsive. So, since I’m on the older laptop spectrum, I went to Settings → Accessibility → Visual effects and turned off Transparency effects and Animation effects. I didn’t stop there; I also went to Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings, opened Performance Options, and adjusted the visual effects Windows uses. You don’t really have to disable every single visual effect. Windows lets you choose which effects to keep, so you can balance appearance and performance. Balanced mode was leaving performance on the table One setting for plugged in, another for battery By default, Windows sets your power mode to Balanced. That’s fine for most people because it tries to strike a middle ground between performance and battery life. However, if you want the best performance possible, . It’s all in the name, literally.You can change this by going to Settings → System → Power & battery → Power mode. Windows lets you choose a different power mode depending on whether your laptop is running on battery or plugged in. I recommend using Best power efficiency when you’re away from a charger and Best performance when you’re plugged in. This way, you get the best of both worlds without actually using the Balanced mode. Besides, if you use Best performance mode while on battery, your laptop consumes more power and generates more heat. Memory integrity was the one setting I hesitated on Turning off a security layer for a performance gain isn’t a decision to make lightly We’re getting to extreme measures here. Memory Integrity is a Windows security feature that prevents malicious or unauthorized code from compromising important parts of the operating system. It’s part of Core Isolation in Windows Security and is enabled by default on supported systems. The feature uses virtualization-based security to isolate certain parts of Windows and protect them from attacks. That’s valuable from a security standpoint, but it can add a performance cost, especially on older hardware. You can find the setting in Windows Security → Device security → Core isolation details → Memory integrity. Turning it off is pretty simple, but this is the one setting on this list I’d approach with more caution. This is because disabling Memory Integrity reduces one part of Windows’ security protection. So, while it did provide an actual performance boost for my laptop, I wouldn’t recommend blindly turning it off if it isn’t really necessary. The security protection it provides may be more valuable than the performance improvement you get from disabling it. My laptop was quietly uploading updates to strangers Delivery Optimization shares your bandwidth by default Many things use system resources in the background and slow down your computer. Delivery Optimization is one of those features that often gets overlooked. Windows uses this feature to download updates and can also use peer-to-peer technology to obtain or distribute update files. The idea is to make downloading updates more efficient and reduce the load on Microsoft’s servers. That’s useful for Microsoft, and it can be useful for Windows users. But I don’t want my aging laptop using bandwidth and system resources to upload update files to other PCs when I’m trying to get the best performance. To manage the feature, go to Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Delivery Optimization. From there, you can turn off Allow downloads from other devices. I prefer this approach over disabling Windows Update entirely. Windows can still download and install updates, but I’m stopping my PC from participating in the peer-to-peer distribution of those update files. Meanwhile, the performance impact may vary, and for most people it probably won’t be really noticeable. But reducing unnecessary background activity is always something that helps in the long run. My five-year-old laptop isn’t ready for retirement just yet None of these settings will turn a laptop into a brand-new system. Hardware still matters, and there’s only so much you can do through software. But that’s also the point. My laptop doesn’t need to be a powerhouse. It just needs to handle Chrome, Word, research, and the other light tasks I throw at it without constantly getting in my way. Windows 11 ships with plenty of features designed to improve security, appearance, convenience, or update delivery. Those features aren’t necessarily bad, but not every default setting makes sense for every PC. So before you start blaming your laptop’s age, look at what Windows is actually doing with its resources.
