There’s a good chance you have a smart speaker sitting somewhere in your house that you haven’t actually spoken to in months. Maybe the novelty wore off. Maybe you got tired of it mishearing you, or you just fell out of the habit of asking it things when your phone does the same job faster. It happens to almost everyone who bought one of these things during a sale. The good news is that voice was never the only thing these speakers were good for, and in some ways it was the least interesting part. Underneath the microphone, most smart speakers are small, always-on computers on your network, capable of triggering other devices, reacting to sensors, and running schedules without you speaking a word. If yours has been demoted to a paperweight that occasionally plays the news, here’s how to put it back to work. Let it run the schedule you used to set manually Your smart speaker doesn’t need to hear you to keep the house on schedule Every major smart speaker platform has a routines or automations section buried in its companion app, and it’s easy to forget it exists because you never open the app once setup is done. This is where you tell the speaker to do things on a timer instead of on command: turn the front porch light on at sunset, drop the thermostat two degrees at 10 p.m., start the coffee maker at 6:45. You set it once in the app, and the speaker just quietly executes it in the background from then on, which is arguably closer to what people actually wanted from a smart home in the first place. Use it as the hub For devices that don’t talk to your phone directly Zigbee locks, sensors, and cheap bulbs can’t talk to your WiFi or your phone directly. They need a hub to translate the signal, and several smart speakers already have that hardware built in, whether you knew it or not. So check before you write off that drawer of smart plugs you gave up pairing. Amazon’s larger Echo units and Google’s Nest Hub models both handle the ever-useful Zigbee. Newer models are picking up Thread and Matter too — the industry’s push to get everything working together without a dozen separate apps. Trigger routines from your location Your phone’s GPS can do what you used to have to ask out loud Your phone’s location can trigger routines instead of your voice. Set a radius around the house, and crossing it fires off whatever routine you’ve built — lights off, thermostat down, doors locked — without you saying a word or even opening the app. Coming home works the same way in reverse. It solves a specific annoyance: whoever leaves the house first usually isn’t the one who remembers to lock up. Geofencing doesn’t care whose phone triggers it. Pair it with a motion or door sensor A 15 each, can plug into the same routine system as a trigger instead of a wake word. A sensor on the front door can tell the speaker to announce who just came in, or to turn on the entryway light for exactly two minutes and then shut it off, which is a small thing but saves you from a dark hallway every single evening. Motion sensors in a garage or basement work the same way, and once it’s set up, you genuinely never think about it again, which is sort of the point of automation to begin with. Use it as a silent household announcement system The intercom feature works fine without anyone yelling into it Multi-room announcements get pitched as a way to shout at your kids from another room. They don’t have to start with your voice at all. Wire one to a dryer sensor, and it announces when the laundry’s done. Wire one to your doorbell camera, and it announces the package on the porch. You don’t have to be near the speaker for either. You don’t even have to be home. What most people think of as a way to yell across the house ends up working more like a notification system that happens to live in your kitchen. Let it handle offline automations your phone can’t Some routines keep running even when the Wi-Fi doesn’t Most cloud-based automations die the second your Wi-Fi does. A handful of newer speakers get around this with local processing — a limited set of routines that keep firing even when the internet’s out. Take that seriously for anything safety-related. A lock that’s supposed to open when a sensor trips, a space heater that’s supposed to shut off after twenty minutes — you don’t want either one waiting on a router to come back online. Look for local or offline execution in your speaker’s app. It’s rarely on by default, and it’s almost never where you’d expect to find it. Feed it data from other apps Weather, calendars, and fitness trackers can run the show instead of you Third-party integration platforms hook a smart speaker into services that have nothing to do with home automation on paper — a weather app, a calendar, a fitness tracker. Rain in the forecast closes the blinds before the storm hits. Your first meeting shows up on the calendar, and the office lights come on five minutes early. Only wake up early enough, and the good-morning routine actually runs. None of that needs a voice assistant. It’s just a speaker sitting in the middle of everything else your phone already tracks, quietly acting on it. None of this requires you to make peace with talking to a speaker again, and that’s the point. The microphone was always just one input among several, and once you start routing schedules, sensors, and other apps into the same system, the speaker ends up doing more work than it ever did when you were asking it questions out loud.
