Summary

  • As we all know, Gmail is a free email service provided by Google and is the most popular email service in the world, owing to its versatility, ease of use, and security resets.
  • Hackers can easily gain access to Gmail and other accounts based on weak and old passwords, recovery emails and telephone numbers that are obsolete, and even stolen phones linked to the account.
  • To rectify these issues and ensure one’s Gmail account remains unhackable, the following checklist should be adhered to:
  • Ensure a strong, unique password is in place, and update it regularly. Use lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and symbols to create a secure password.
  • Double-check the registered recovery email and telephone number to ensure they are both still current and valid.
  • Check all devices signed into the Gmail account and ensure they are recognised devices. If not, sign out, and change passwords.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication as an added security measure, enabling a second verification method along with your password; this could be via an authenticator app, SMS, or a physical security key.
  • Generate and store backup codes in a safe, offline location, to help regain account access in emergencies.
