Google Is Overhauling Overviews With AI Mode, and Search Will Never Be the Same

Summary
Google is piloting a new “AI Mode” for search results that provides users with an AI-generated chat inbox to their queries
Powered by Google’s large language model, Gemini 2.0, the mode intends to respond to more open-ended queries, with the ability to answer follow-up questions via text, voice or imagery.
Reminiscent of other large language models such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, Google’s AI mode aims to keep the search engine behemoth ahead of the curve, in a world where search is becoming more conversational.
Although the new mode is only available to a select few users outside of its Labs testing environment, it signifies an ambition to improve search, whilst competing with other AI- conversational modelled search engines.
