That’s real, but small enough that it can easily disappear into the normal variation of a day’s use. There’s a simple reason for this outcome. So for a display that’s already running at moderate brightness, there’s little display power available to reclaim. Most apps that use dark mode simply recolor backgrounds and menus, but content such as photos, web pages, videos, and ads remains as bright as always. Hence, two otherwise similar phones running dark mode may draw differently depending on what they’re displaying. The images and content on the screen determine how much battery savings dark mode delivers. So, does dark mode actually save battery? The simple answer is yes, it can save power. It has a genuine effect on an OLED phone. However, you may not notice meaningful power savings during ordinary indoor use at the typical brightness levels people use. But with the right conditions, such as high brightness, an OLED panel, and content that is actually dark, you’d get a noticeable difference. However, without those conditions, the benefits may shrink significantly. Individual pixels on OLED screens light independently, with pure black drawing negligible power. There is less leverage on LCD panels because a backlight runs underneath everything.
