Party Down Seasons 1-3
Are we having fun yet?
Our first selection isn’t a Netflix original, but is a great, binge-worthy sitcom that not enough people have seen. Party Down is a Starz series about a group of struggling actors who work for a catering company to make ends meet. They work a different event each episode, from singles mixers to kids’ birthday parties to adult film awards. The writing is sharp, and frustrations are relatable, and the cast is top-notch; it includes the likes of Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr, Ryan Hansen, and Jane Lynch.
The first two seasons of Party Down aired back in 2009 and 2010, with a third season airing years later in 2023. All three seasons are now available on Netflix.
Wonka’s The Golden Ticket
Bad taste, good fun
This reality series inspired by the classic movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory pits 12 Golden Ticket winners against each other as they complete physical, mental, and moral challenges on a massive set designed to look like Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. The winner gets “a lifetime supply of money.” Based on the trailer, challenges will include things like holding onto handles while you’re spun around, building towers out of weird-shaped blocks, and licking wallpaper.
The original Willy Wonka movie was a pretty wholesome affair, so there’s something a little odd about a reality show that uses the movie’s trappings to pit people against each other, and let’s not even touch the AI-generated voice of Gene Wilder that narrates that proceedings. Still, if you’re a fan of reality TV, this could be a fun watch.

A Different World
A classic returns
A spin-off of The Cosby Show, the original A Different World ran for six seasons on NBC from the late 1980s through the early 1990s. It was set at Hillman College, a fictional historically black university in Virginia. Over 30 years later, Netflix is reviving the show. Deborah Wayne (Maleah Joi Moon), the child of Whitley Gilbert-Wayne (Jasmine Guy) and Dwayne Wayne (Kadeem Hardison) from the original show, heads to Hillman to forge her own legacy. With old cast members returning and lots of new faces, this could be the start of a great new series.

Steel Ball Run — JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, 2nd-3rd Stage
First episode streaming September 25
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure is one of the weirdest, most popular anime series running together. Each season tells a different story. The current season, Steel Ball Run, is set in 1890, when jockeys participate in a cross-country horse race for a $50 million grand prize. Along the way, contestants like Johnny Joestar and Gyro Zeppeli will use their “Stands” — a kind of familiar that grants them special abilities — to overcome unexpected challenges.
Netflix will air 11 new episodes of Steel Ball Run starting on Friday, September 25, with new episodes dropping every week.
The Great British Baking Show Season 14

If you find Wonka’s The Golden Ticket too confrontational a reality show, this might be more to your liking. The Great British Baking Show brings together amateur bakers from across the UK to show off their skills, and generally has a reputation for being gentle and easygoing. There’s no prize money involved, so it’s really about the baking, the relationships, and the good vibes.
Season 14 will introduce Nigella Lawson as a judge. New episodes drop on Fridays.

Unabomber
Available to stream September 25
Finally, this intense new movie stars Jacob Tremblay as Ted Kaczynski, the domestic terrorist who conducted a bombing campaign in the United States between 1978 and 1995. The movie will jump back and forth between two timelines: in one, we’ll follow Kaczynski as he takes part in a psychological study conducted by Henry Murray (Russell Crowe) when he was a student at Harvard in the late 1950s and early ’60s. In the other, we’ll follow FBI agent Joanne Miller (Shailene Woodley) as she leads a manhunt for Kaczynski.
Netflix has a long history of producing gripping true crime content, so hopefully Unabomber will be a gripping watch.
