Summary

The animated sci-fi series Scavengers Reign began as an eight-minute short in 2016 before spending years trying to become a full series. It eventually premiered on HBO Max in 2023, earned lots of critical acclaim, and was canceled after one season. Netflix then picked it up, giving fans hope that the streamer known for saving many axed series might allow the story to continue. But in a tale we’ve heard all too many times, Netflix decided to pass on a second season. It’s a really unfortunate turn of events because Scavengers Reign is the kind of sci-fi show that’s difficult to find because it doesn’t rely on an established franchise or characters to give its story a boost. Instead, it introduces viewers to a new alien world and puts a small group of survivors in the middle of it. bflvzv8tqbs8hciy7pvyonyfmgk-1.jpg

After their cargo ship, the Demeter 227, is damaged, a group of survivors becomes stranded on a planet called Vesta. They are separated from each other and must find a way back to the ship while dealing with the planet’s dangerous wildlife. What makes Vesta interesting is that the planet has its own ecosystem, with plants and animals that interact with each other in ways that might seem strange. One organism can become part of another’s survival process, while something that looks rather harmless can turn out to be much more dangerous than initially expected. The animation brings these interactions to life really well. Vesta is colorful and beautiful, but it can also be a little scary. Especially when the characters become part of the planet’s biological processes. The show doesn’t explain every creature’s behavior either, which makes the planet feel like a place to be discovered rather than a story setting. But it’s the uncertainty that makes life on Vesta difficult for the survivors. Since they can’t rely on what they already know, every new encounter forces them to adapt. As the journey continues, the planet begins to have an effect on them too. And that becomes just as important to the overall story as finding a way back to their ship. The longer they stay, the more the planet changes them The planet affects how the survivors see the world around them The survivors are divided into three groups, and each storyline approaches Vesta differently. Azi (Wunmi Mosaku) initially depends on her robot companion Levi (Alia Shawkat) to help her survive. But when Levi starts developing new abilities, wants, and instincts after coming into contact with the planet’s lifeforms, Azi has to reconsider her relationship with the robot. Sam (Bob Stephenson) and Ursula (Sunita Mani) experience a different set of troubles as they try to find their way back to the Demeter. Their trip becomes increasingly dangerous as Vesta’s wildlife interferes with their plans. At the same time, Sam’s actions show just how quickly survival can become complicated when the environment starts changing the people inside it. Then there’s Kamen (Ted Travelstead), who’s run in with the creature Hollow takes the show’s darker ideas much further. Hollow initially seems to be helping Kamen. But as more time passes, their relationship becomes a little creepy. Kamen’s guilt and selfish decisions become tied to Hollow’s, causing it to turn into something sinister. All these separate storylines eventually overlap, bringing the survivors closer to the Demeter and to each other. By this point, they’ve all been through very different experiences on Vesta, and getting back to the ship no longer means returning to their lives before the crash. The question is what they’ll do with everything that happened to them once they finally get there. A second season would have been nice, but don’t wait for one The first season leaves room for more stories The Scavengers Reign cancellation is really frustrating because the creators had more ideas for the story. After Netflix decided not to renew the series, co-creator Joe Bennett shared a teaser showcasing what a potential second season would have looked like alongside a message to fans. “This is not the end,” he wrote on Instagram. “There is more story to be told, we are ready to make another season.” Bennett’s message also revealed how difficult it was to get the show made in the first place. “We’ve had to fight tooth and nail every step of the way to get this show made,” he explained, starting all the way back in 2016 with the Scavengers short film to the release of the first season. It’s a case study for believing in something and persevering through a million and one hurdles.” The good news is that the first season still works as a complete story. There are unanswered questions and lots of room for the story to continue. But the 12 episodes bring the main survivors to a natural point in their adventure. That makes it easier to recommend as a weekend watch, rather than a show that leaves you feeling like you’ve only seen half of a much bigger story. It also helps that Scavengers Reign is a show that rewards watching a few episodes in a row. Each episode introduces another strange part of Vesta or reveals a new detail about the survivors, so there’s usually something that makes you want to keep going. There may never be another season, but that doesn’t make the first one any less worth watching.
