A report by MIT Technology Review has found that artificial intelligence (AI) offers huge potential to create more efficiencies and innovate within the food production industry, in order to feed the world’s growing population.
AI can be used from the farm to the factory, monitoring crop health via drone, tailoring fertilisers and herbicides to specific areas and using more accurate harvesting techniques.
In labs, AI can enhance genetic editing to improve the resilience of crops and nutritional value of raw ingredients, while in food production it can optimise processes, improve texture and flavour, and enhance safety.
However, the report has found that despite the potential, the use of AI in the food sector has been limited by a lack of data sharing, differing needs between companies, a lack of talent and few standards in place.
It concludes that alongside these challenges, the use of AI in the food industry is accelerating, with predictive analytics and supply chain insights two key areas of development.
