A new group is searching for ways to save the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica, also known as the ‘doomsday glacier’ as it is melting four times faster than previous predictions.
The Arête Glacier Initiative, a non-profit research organisation, has granted the research funds to scientists in a bid to discover why glaciers are melting and if this process can be reversed.
One option to save the glacier is to drill holes allowing water to be pumped out and refrozen, thereby slowing it down.
However, huge engineering projects such as this face huge legal and ethical questions, not to mention the potential side effects of such monumental actions.
The longer this situation continues, the more scientists are considering every possible option available to them.
