The Download: how the military is using AI, and AI’s climate promises
1 min read
Summary
MIT Technology Review has released a ‘The Download’ newsletter compiling the most important headlines surrounding new technologies, including generative AI tools and carbon offset promises.
One article highlighted the fact that the US military have been using generative AI tools to conduct intelligence gathering on a hitherto unseen scale.
The generative AI tools can reportedly scour thousands of pieces of intelligence in a fraction of the time it would take humans to achieve the same result, thus providing a major boost to military effectiveness.
Another article points out the similarities between pledges about the carbon footprint of AI and carbon offsetting, with both perhaps providing a licence for companies and organisations to expand their carbon footprints whilst claiming to provide a solution to the issue.
