Here’s why we need to start thinking of AI as “normal”

Summary
An essay by two Princeton researchers has called for artificial intelligence (AI) to be seen and treated as a normal piece of technology, rather than as something alien or superhuman that requires heightened controls.
Sayash Kapoor and Arvind Narayanan said that discussing the societal impacts of AI tends to expect those impacts to occur at the same speed as its rapid development, when uptake is likely to be much slower.
The researchers also cautioned against using incoherent terms such as “superintelligence” and recommended focusing more on how AI can worsen existing social problems than on how it might create new ones.
They also suggested that AI would give birth to a new category of human labour focused on monitoring and verifying AI systems, rather than automating all human work.
