Sougwen Chung is a non-binary Chinese-Canadian artist who views the incursion of AI into creative pursuits as an opportunity to embrace uncertainty, rather than a threat.
Chung presents artworks live and in the moment that are created alongside or in conjunction with robots, with the creative process seen by audiences in real-time.
The work challenges perceptions of what is created by humans versus machines, with Chung stating they do not seek to replace but to “deepen and expand” traditional methods.
One installation, Spectral, featured painting by robotic arms controlled by AI and guided by electroencephalogram data, which was presented at the World Economic Forum in January 2025.
Chung grew up speaking code and music and was fascinated by the “[nascent and optimistic frontier” of the internet.
