Roundtables: Generative AI Search and the Changing Internet

Summary
On 18th February 2025, MIT Technology Review hosted a discussion focused on generative AI search, exploring how AI will alter the way in which we search for information online, and how it will impact the internet as a whole.
The discussion was moderated by Mat Honan, CEO, and Niall Firth, Executive Editor, of MIT Technology Review.
Firth posited that AI will usher in a new age of the internet, expanding the capabilities for us to access the world’s knowledge base, whilst Honan noted that the transition wouldn’t be without its challenges, referencing copyright issues and the potential for less reliable search outcomes.
This discussion follows the recent unveiling of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot that can answer questions and compose essays, poems, and code. ChatGPT is backed by Microsoft to the tune of $10bn.
