Summary
PsiQuantum is an American quantum computing start-up that has recently announced that it has overcome ongoing problems in the quantum computing field to do with scalability, announcing that it can manufacture quantum chips in large numbers.
The firm burst out of stealth mode in 2021 with $450m of funding to make photonic quantum chips, which had previously been thought of as impractical due to the challenge of managing the fact photons travel at a blinding speed and are hard to create and detect.
However, the technology, which uses particles of light to encode data, offers advantages over existing computer methods such as its natural compatibility with existing fibre-optic networks, and last week it unveiled its hardware for photonic quantum computing that it claims can be developed in large numbers.
PsiQuantum partnered with semiconductor manufacturer GlobalFoundries to produce the chips, and the company claims that millions of the chips have already been made.
This would mark the beginning of the first truly scalable era of quantum computing.
