A Massive AI Analysis Found Genes Related to Brain Aging—and Drugs to Slow It Down

Summary
Researchers in China used AI to analyse brain scans from almost 39,000 people to find genes linked to brain ageing and the roots of neurological disorders.
The study identified seven genes which were already being researched as potential treatments for age-related cognitive decline.
A search of clinical trials revealed 28 drugs targeted at those genes, some of which are already approved for use, including hydrocortisone and resveratrol.
The aim is to reuse the drugs to treat brain ageing faster than developing new ones, but they will need to be put through rigorous testing to prove they help fight cognitive decline.
Scientists measured the “brain age gap”, the difference between a person’s chronological age and brain age, which correlated with the onset of Alzheimer’s and other neurological disorders.
