Summary
The Machine Intelligence From Cortical Networks (MICrONS) consortium has constructed the largest ever brain map of a mammalian brain, detailing the connections and architecture of a mouse brain.
Using nanoscale resolution imaging and artificial intelligence it mapped a cubic millimetre of brain, containing 84,000 neurons, half a billion synapses, and over three miles of neural wiring.
The links between brain structure and neuronal functions can help scientists better understand the neural code and how the brain forms memories, perceives the outside world and makes decisions.
The new resource could also help develop more flexible AI.
The team are planning to use the technology to map larger portions of the brain.
