Snapchat scraps ‘simple’ redesign as it loses users in North America

Summary
Snapchat owner Snap has announced it is shelving plans to simplify the design of the app, following its Q1 2025 earnings report which showed a loss of one million North American users.
Instead, the firm will test a revised layout which retains the current five tabs.
Snap originally planned to remove two tabs, leaving just three in the main navigation bar, but has now reversed this decision following reduced usage or user frustration.
The company says its most engaged users showed a clear preference for the existing five-tab layout.
Snap’s stock sank and users abandoned the app in 2018 after a redesign aimed at separating content from friends and brands.
The new five-tab layout is designed to offer the best of both approaches, bringing more Stories to the messaging experience and making Spotlight easier to find.
