Microsoft is getting ready to host Elon Musk’s Grok AI model

Summary
Microsoft has confirmed that it’s in talks to host Elon Musk’s Grok AI model and has instructed engineers to prepare to add it to its Azure cloud ecosystem.
The move could anger Microsoft’s partner OpenAI and inflame the two companies’ recent tensions over access to AI models and capacity requirements.
Musk wants to make Grok the go-to AI hosting model, and tying it up with Azure would help Microsoft achieve its goal of becoming the platform host for all popular AI models.
Microsoft has also been trying to make its own AI models more accessible to consumers and reduce its over-reliance on OpenAI, but its recent attempts have reportedly not gone well.
Copilot, for example, has seen no growth for more than a year and has put Microsoft’s AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman under pressure.
It was also reported this week that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella are growing apart, and that Nadella has been making contingency plans should Microsoft and OpenAI’s partnership break down.
