Alphabet subsidiary Google plans to make its AI chatbot Gemini available to kids aged under 13, to support them with homework and storytelling.
Parents will be able to monitor and restrict access to the chatbot using Google’s Family Link app.
The move follows complaints from parents that chatbots developed by other firms were misleading children into believing they were talking to actual people.
Google’s spokesperson Karl Ryan confirmed that parents would be notified when their children first accessed Gemini, and could disable access via Family Link if they chose to do so.
