Starbase has been approved as a new city in Texas, near SpaceX’s Boca Chica Beach launch site, with a vote of 212-6 in favour of the plan.
Just 283 people were eligible to vote, and prior to the ballot, a petition had obtained enough signatures to force the vote.
Three people with ties to SpaceX will lead the new city.
SpaceX stands to gain more control over the site, as it currently needs permission from Cameron County to close the beach for launches.
A bill going through Texas’ legislature would give the power to approve such closures to municipalities that meet certain conditions, meaning that Starbase could soon give SpaceX more autonomy over its operations there.
