Summary

  • In late April, Amazon-owned autonomous vehicle maker Zoox recalled all its taxis after a crash in Las Vegas, when one of its vehicles hit a car that had emerged from a perpendicular driveway.
  • A software update has now been issued to rectify the situation, and has been rolled out to all 270 vehicles in the fleet from 16-17 April.
  • The issue is that the autonomous vehicle’s algorithms predicted a collision when it approached a car waiting to pull out of a driveway, even when the vehicle was travelling at high speeds.
  • Although the incident resulted in only minor damage, and there were no injuries, Zoox described the incident to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in its voluntary safety recall report, outlining the software update to rectify the situation.
  • Zoox issued a similar recall in March, after two incidents in which motorcyclists rear-ended autonomous vehicles that had suddenly braked.
