Google searches are falling in Safari for the first time ever — probably because of AI

Summary
During the ongoing antitrust trial against Google, Cupertino company Apple claimed that for the first time ever, Google searches fell in its native Safari browser last month.
Apple senior vice president of services, Eddy Cue, blamed the decline on the increasing use of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Microsoft Copilot.
The growth in AI web search could see users less likely to use Google for information, thus impacting Apple’s revenue from Google Search, which stood at $20bn in 2022 for making the search engine default in Safari.
Amid concerns from independent website owners about traffic from searches falling, Google Search vice president Pandu Nayak recently said he couldn’t offer “any guarantees” that matters would improve.
