Summary
During a courtroom trial in which the Department of Justice (DOJ) is pressuring it to unwind its search engine monopoly, Apple’s Eddy Cue has argued that AI services, rather than search engines, are more likely to provide competition for Google.
Cue testified that in the past six months search volume had fallen for the first time in 22 years.
He attributed this to users turning to AI chatbots for information.
However, the DOJ disagreed, arguing that AI had not yet progressed to that point.
Nevertheless, Cue argued that AI search options were where the “greatest potential” lay, although Apple was still working on them.
He also revealed that even if Apple were to terminate its relationship with Google, the latter would remain the best search engine available.
