Education app Duolingo is dropping its hearts point system in favour of an energy mechanic, which it claims will be a more positive experience for users.
Rather than incurring a point penalty for getting an answer wrong, a user will instead spend one unit of energy, with the option to regain energy randomly by completing exercises successfully.
The energy bar will be 25 units strong, regenerating over time and also obtainable via the in-app purchase option Gems.
Unlimited energy will be offered to subscribers to the Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max packages.
The new system is being rolled out on iOS over the coming months, with an Android launch planned for later in the year.
The change is one of several new developments for the company, which recently announced it was to place an increased focus on AI and expanded its language courses offering.
