PayPal launches iPhone NFC payments in Germany after EU forced Apple to open up

Summary
PayPal’s tap-to-pay function in Germany now works with iPhone NFC chips after EU rules forced Apple to open its payments system to third-party providers under the Digital Markets Act.
It is compatible with Mastercard payment terminals and currently only works with iPhones, not Apple Watches, as the company has not rolled out the function for its smartwatch.
PayPal’s contactless wallet is the second to utilise the change in Apple’s ecosystem after Norwegian firm Vipps became the first in December.
However, it’s not only in the EU that Apple has opened iPhone tap-to-pay as it also plans to allow in-app NFC payments in the US and other regions.
Apple also allows businesses to use iPhone NFC readers to accept payments in third-party apps, a function PayPal also started to offer in March last year.
