Nvidia’s flattery of Trump wins reversal of AI chip limits and a Huawei clampdown

The US Department of Commerce (DOC) announced on 16 May that it has lifted restrictions on exporting AI chips, preventing countries such as China and Russia from obtaining them without approval, due to take effect on 15 May.
However, the DOC said it will issue a replacement rule for protecting US AI technology “in the future” with no further details.
Meanwhile, the DOC has also warned companies they will be in violation of US export control regulations if they use Huawei’s Ascend AI chips anywhere in the world.
The announcements come as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joined President Trump in Saudi Arabia this week to solicit AI investments for US companies.
