SoundCloud changes its TOS again after an AI uproar

Summary
SoundCloud will change the terms of use over the next few weeks to ensure that artists’ content cannot be used to inform or train AI or AI services without their consent.
SoundCloud CEO, Elija Seton, accepted that the previous terms of use, introduced in February 2021, had caused confusion and were too broad.
The update follows a recent debate on whether or not SoundCloud has been using artists’ music without consent to train AI, including large language models, for music creation.
Ed Newton-Rex, a tech ethicist, is not satisfied with the amended terms, as he believes that the language could still allow for “models trained on your work that might not directly replicate your style but that still compete with you in the market”.
SoundCloud has not yet responded to The Verge’s request for comment.
