The disclaimer railed against the “immutable biological reality” of sex, a phrase taken from an executive order, which the Biden administration has also said it will retain.
The move aims to deny gender-affirming healthcare to trans people and restrict their rights in other areas, as well as to push the idea that trans people do not exist, in line with an extreme right-wing ideology that has widespread support under the Trump administration and within parts of the Republican Party.
The move has already led to censoring of terms in government-funded scientific research, leading to concerns over the future of clinical research.
